Inventions are classified by alphanumeric codes according to technical and functional criteria. The first characters of the codes correspond with the general classes and the next ones are getting more specific. These codes are helpful to search inventions in patent databases.

CIP The International Patent Classification of the World Intellectual Property Organization is based in the Strasbourg Agreement and entered into force in 1975. At present there are 62 States party of the Agreement. The CIP is reviewed and new versions are regularly published.

CPC The Cooperative Patent Classification system, in force from 1 January 2013, is a bilateral system which has been jointly developed by the EPO and the USPTO.
